Millfield’s Maths Approach

  • Learning process – concrete, pictorial, abstract
  • Developmental process – fluency, problem solving, reasoning

At the heart of Millfeild’s mastery approach is the belief that all children have the potential to succeed.  They should have access to the same curriculum content, and, rather than being extended with new learning, should first deepen their conceptual understanding by tackling varied and challenging problems.

Similarly, with calculation strategies, children must demonstrate their understanding of these procedures through the use of concrete resources and pictorial representations to ensure fluency and a depth of understanding.

The principle of the concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) approach it that for children to have a true understanding of a mathematical concept they need to master all three phases.  Reinforcement and a true understanding of a mathematical concept is gained by going back and forth between these representations and by showing a varied use of strategies. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly will be challenged to explain their understanding in a variety of ways and with a varied and sophisticated level of ‘Going Deeper’ challenges.  Children who are not sufficiently fluent will continue to consolidate their understanding.
