RAF Scampton - Veterans Reunion

Picture 1

Young Journalists always get their interview!

Royal Air Force Scampton hosted a memorable day for a Veterans Reunion this week.

Heighington Millfield YJs received a special invite to cover the event. So armed with camera and microphones, the team documented the day and managed to speak to some very interesting ex-servicemen from ex-soldiers to retired Spitfire pilots. And with a rare and intimate display from the RAF’s very own Red Arrows the day was a great success.
See our short film to find out what went on.

PS Towards the end of this wonderful event, a Lancaster bomber flew over. On its return to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre one of its engines caught fire. Their FaceBook site states:
Hello all,
Sorry not to have posted anything earlier about the Lancaster, but things have been a little frenetic at the Flight since Thursday. There is of course lots of speculation as to what happened, but the fact is that after a problem with the number 4 engine, the Lancaster crew did a brilliant job of both handling the emergency and getting the aircraft on the ground quickly and safely. All of the crew are safe and the aircraft is intact in the hangar where investigation as to the cause of the problem is being conducted.
This means that we will not see the Lancaster airborne on Sunday for VE day, but I will lead 3 fighters over Horseguards Parade prior to the Red Arrows flying over, so the occasion will be marked appropriately by the Flight and the Royal Air Force as a whole.
We don’t know at present how long it will be until the Lancaster is back in the air, but we have already ensured that most of the events that she was attending in May and June will be covered by either the Dakota or a fighter in the event that she isn’t serviceable for them.
I know that this doesn’t answer all questions, but at present we don’t have all the answers. I thank everyone for all the support that you have shown and encourage you to remain patient and I know that we all look forward to seeing her back in the air again as soon as possible.
